Bees Collection

These four guys were inspired by a commission for the Honey Bee.

Bees are found almost everywhere, in many variations. They are essential to the survival of humans and other animals. Approximately one-third of the total human diet is derived directly or indirectly from insect-pollinated plants.

Bee populations, especially honey bees and bumble bees, are experiencing an alarming decline. Numerous scientific and agricultural organizations have initiated studies and information campaigns to halt the decline of these miraculous and essential insects. Links of interest include:

NOTES ON THE DANCES OF HONEYBEES PAINTINGS

I used scientific references for the accuracy of Dance behavior, but wanted to do something unique for the art of the dances. Something unexpected happened as I developed and layered the background...sort of an optical illusion in the color play. The hieroglyph-style strokes of the various dance patterns across the bottom of each painting again defer to science but play an important role in the composition, too.
